Project Summary

For over a year, I was the lead designer on three magazines that targeted three distinct age groups. With these magazines, I hand designed each page and created branding style guides for the various repeating subjects each issue.

Challenge

Designing for three magazines, catering to distinct age groups (3-6, 7-10, 11-18), posed the unique task of ensuring readability for younger eyes. Balancing engaging visuals with sufficient space for copywriters became a central challenge, requiring precision in captivating varied imaginations while conveying meaningful content.

Approach

Standardization was the key to my approach. I had other designers under me helping with less complicated pages, so I needed a system they could easily create within. I established a unified visual identity across three magazines using a carefully designed modular grid. This grid, seamlessly aligned with the printer’s baseline grid, ensured consistency in layouts while accommodating diverse age groups. The dual focus on visual appeal and technical compatibility streamlined the design process, providing a collaborative foundation for designers and copywriters.

Results

The successful implementation of the modular grid not only addressed the challenge but transformed the entire design process. By aligning with the printer’s baseline grid, we not only upheld printing standards but also streamlined collaboration. This structured approach facilitated the visualization of content placement for the design team and empowered writers to seamlessly integrate their copy into the wireframe. The outcome was a harmonious fusion of design and functionality, resulting in not just visually striking magazine layouts but also a more efficient workflow for the entire creative team.
